Basketball

Basketball is a team sport in which two teams, typically consisting of five players each, compete to score points by shooting a ball through the opposing team’s hoop or basket. The game is played on a rectangular court with a hoop at each end, raised about 10 feet above the floor. Players advance the ball by dribbling (bouncing the ball while walking or running) or passing it to teammates. Points are scored in various ways: two points for field goals made from inside the three-point line, three points for shots made from beyond the three-point line, and one point for free throws awarded after certain fouls.

Basketball emphasizes skills such as shooting, dribbling, passing, and teamwork. It is governed by rules that outline player conduct, the dimensions of the court, scoring, and fouls. Basketball is widely played at many levels, including professional leagues like the NBA, collegiate competitions, and informal pick-up games, making it one of the most popular sports globally. The sport promotes physical fitness, cooperation, and competition among participants.
